Maül, The wise

Maül is a knowledge deity. Maül the smith is a Valar and one of the Ahnur. Maül is given lordship over the matter that composes Midgard and is a master of all the crafts that shape it. The race of the Dwarves was created by Maül and given sapience by Aru. The dwarves call him Mahäl, meaning "The Maker" in their tongue. Sometimes worshipped as a god by men, representing skill and craftsmanship, who is also thematically associated with Earth, stone, metal and the dwarves. During the Music of the Ahnur, Maül's music became the lands of Middle-earth. His themes concerned the physical things of which Middle-earth is made; Other of his works include Angarnor (the chain of Melnikor) and the Brazier of Aru. He is husband to Ylvanna. His name translates from Elvish as invention.
