"Queen of the stars, Nemesis of Evil, Mother of the Light"


Liriana is one of the Valari, a group of divine beings similar to archangels. Also known as "Queen of the stars", she is said to be too beautiful for words; within her face radiates the light of Ilúvatar (God/Aru). She resides with her husband Amunyu, with whom she shares a complementary power. When they are together, Amunyu "sees further than all other eyes, through mist, and through darkness, and over the leagues of the sea" and Liriana "hears more clearly than all other ears the sound of voices that cry from east to west". Liriana created the stars before the Valari descended into the world, and later she made the constellations, the celestial sphere around Middle-earth. When the evil Valari Morgoroth first began to create his discord, Liriania saw his mind, and rejected him. Morgoroth fears and hates Liriania the most out of the Valari. This is because he greatly desired to possess the silvery light of the stars and moons, and the golden light of the sun, that which she created. Morgoroth however, failed in this task.

Liriania`s most significantly creation was the Dirnalvahn, The Sickle of the Valari. It was an important constellation of seven stars set in the sky by her as an enduring warning to Morgoroth and his servants, and which precipitated the Awakening of the Elves.
