Middle-earth

There was a time when the world was slowly plunging into darkness and chaos. A time with witchcraft and sorcery. A time where nearly none stood against evil.

Rules of magic

Astrologists believe that space might be an illusion. Here is everywhere and everywhere is here. Some enchanters also thinks that time is an illusion as well. Now is always and always is now. Perhaps we are all as one: using others as a point of view.

The Enchanters cant prove any of this as of yet, to much remains to be discovered. But the stars, sun and the moons seem to be real enough. This because they can prove that events that occur on Middle-earth are linked to the sky, Day, night, heat, cold, seasons and tidal effects.

What mages DO know for certain is that magic is like a river and cannot be controlled at all times. It proves harder to counter wild magical effects that might occur rather than energies directed in a controlled fashion from a sapient scource. (another mage or magically gifted creature).
Thus wielding magic by trying to shape or manipulating it is dangerous. Because at a certain point you dont know what might happen, but being able to control magic makes you very powerful. Magic is like a torrent which will overwhelm you if you do not control it: such as more powerful and dangerous effects, but with higher backlashes.

"Magic has a firm place on the rational mind, but insanity is known to unlock magical powers as well."
- Archmage Valerian the white

- Magic that is scientific, researched, reduces backlashes but increases predictability and easiness of being countered by other mages that posess similar training. It is not uncommon to specialize in magic from the elemental schools, and this kind of magic can be easier to spot.

- Sometimes it seems like magic cannot cross running water: the enchanters`s believe that spells are sometimes penalized whenever they need to cross a stream of running water or on it, why is unknown as of yet.

- Magic used the wrong way may draw attention from others sensitive enough to detect it, thus creating a lot of stories of demons walking Middle-earth to feed on mortals. These events have been known to brew fear into the commoners in the streets that learn of a persons magical nature.

Some types of magic is harmful, caster suffers some side effect for casting, mainly concerning the dark arts of necromancy, infernal rituals or blood magic. The caster is required to perform a regular ritual like a sacrifice of blood as a gift, or to take energy from somone or something to make the spells work, or use spells to remove a persons free will. Magic used in these ways are illegal for the sake of safety and order, making mages involved in such matters become outlawed and even hunted.
