Middle-earth

There was a time when the world was slowly plunging into darkness and chaos. A time with witchcraft and sorcery. A time where nearly none stood against evil.

The Silmarils (radiance of pure light) are three brilliant jewels composed of the unmarred light of the Two World Trees. They were one of a kind, beautiful and they represented purity. Morgoroth coveted them because they were representative of something he could never be.

The Silmarils are not mere jewels which shine with a great light. The three Silmarils are in some sense both alive and sacred. How Amun was able to create these objects is not fully explained. Even the Valari, including Maül, could not copy them. In fact, even Amun may not have been able to recreate more jewels, as a great part of his essence went into their making. Their worth is close to infinite, even to the Valari, as they are unique and irreplaceable. The Silmarils themselves are said to produce their own light, which comes from the Two Trees, but also to reflect the light of any other lights that come near them.

The Silmarils were hallowed by Liriana in the presence of the Two World Trees, so that they would burn the hands of any evil creature or mortal who touched them.

Together with Alinthur, the rebellious Vala Malnikor destroyed the Two World Trees. The Silmarils thus remain as the only true source of the unmarred light of the World Trees. Later, news came that Melnikor had stolen the Silmarils amidst the chaos Alinthur caused. After this deed, Melnikor fled from Amaril to his fortress Angband in the north of Middle-earth. Thereafter he wore the Silmarils in his iron crown.

Amun was furious with Melnikor, and how deep he had fallen.

Amun had two mortal sons, Marhedros and Maraglor. They swore to regain ownership of the Silmarils and return them to each of the elemental places they belonged to; sky, earth and water. Five major battles were fought in Angband, but ultimately the elves and all the humans and other races, who took the oath, failed in their attempt to regain the Silmarils from Melnikor.

One of the Silmarils was finally recovered by the two brothers, through great peril and loss. Nothing would stop them from retrieveing the Silmarils, and their pursuance of the jewels drove them to madness. The Valari then set the first Silmaril as a star in the sky, to serve as a token of the sorrow they caused, as a reminder of others how far one can fall in their pursuit of justice. The other two gems remained in Melnikor's hands. As the angels Middle-earth for a last stand against Melnikor, the two fallen sons of Amun were finally successfull of retrieveing the last two silmarils at the end of the War of Rage. But the brothers evil acts had created complications of returning the Silmarils.

The jewels burned their hands in denial of their rights of possession, as evil creatures could not touch them. For a moment the brothers could pierce their own madness and see clearly what must be done. In agony, Marhedros threw himself and the second Silmaril into a fiery pit in Demonia, and Maraglor threw himself and the third Silmaril into the deep dark Southern sea. Thus the Silmarils remained in all three elements — in the sky, earth and water - As of today only one Silmaril remains visible to the World; the first Silmaril known as "the Morning" and "Evening Star", as it always burns bright to honor the two brothers sacrifice.

The Libram of Legends speaks of a prophesy. Morgoroth's final return. The world will be changed and the Silmarils must be recovered by the Valari. If recovered, then Amun must willingly give Ylvanna the Silmarils to break them, and with their light she can attempt to revive the Two World Trees. The Fortress of Morgoroth, Agband, would become permanently flattened, and the light of the Two Trees would fill the world in eternal bliss once more, ending Morgoroth`s taint once and for all.
