Morgoroth, Black foe of the world"In the end all will burn in hellfire and darkness. It is only a matter of time."Morgoroth is the main antagonist amongst the
Ahnur. (originally Melnikor meaning
"He Who Arises In Might" in Elvish)
Melnikor was the most powerful and beautiful of the Ahnur. Melnikor turned to darkness and became
Morgoroth, the definitive antagonist of Earth from which all evil in the world of Middle-Earth ultimately stems. He created the "greenskins" (Orcs, trolls), and he was able to give them sapience when he stole the Flame Imperishable from
Aru. With the flame and his own power, he corrupted much of Middle-Earth, and cast shadows over the former lands of radiance. Half of the elves that remained on Middle-Earth became tainted by Morgoroth`s hate and jealousy. This made them known as Dark Elves as they were defeated by the high elves and were driven underground as punishment for waging war on the surface.
Morgoroth was the principal agent of evil in
The First Age. His influence lingered in the world even after he was cast from the world by his fellow Ahnur. He can in a way be called the father of many of the "monsters" roaming Middle-Earth, as they were spawned by the evil he left behind. Morgoroth's example provided later ages a cautionary tale against pride, wrath, envy, lust for power, and greed — and the destruction these visit upon oneself and others.
Melnikor was not called "Morgoroth" until he destroyed
The Two World Trees of Amaril, murdered Linwë the guardian and stole the Silmarils in the First Age. The darker name was then bestowed by
Amun, and the Elves called the fallen one thereafter by that name alone.
Morgoroth`s taint proves as powerful a divine patron as he himself represented in the First Age. Fueling his taint on Middle-earth from The Void, he also shepherds his people toward glory and dominance of the Outer Sea in the Eastern Kingdoms. His plans reach eons into the future, and the minor setbacks of yesterday are all factored into the cost of doing a devil’s business.
